Classic/Antique Car Repair: eletical problems, Jaguar, Roll-Royce

Question
QUESTION: hey jeff
i hope u can help me out with this but i have a 83 camaro with a 350ci carb and 6 months ago i bought this car on my birth day and well the first weekend i had it the car was amazing, but driving it home in the evening that first sunday driving it around all at the same time my radio, cig lighter "had a GPS plugged in",eletric fan and headlights go out all at once,im thinking its a relay switch but i changed all that i can,but now im thinking its a computer modicule..what do you think may help me out with this?

ANSWER: Hello Edward,

For starters I am really happy for you, that you treated yourself to a nice birthday present!!  But I sorry to hear that you had trouble.

I do appreciate you asking me a question, however that is NOT in my area expertise.

I have volunteered to answer questions that relate to “Automotive Wooden Interior Trim”.

Specifically the “Real” wood trim parts found in Jaguars, Mercedes-Benz, Rolls-Royce, Bentleys, BMWs, Jensen Healeys, Austin Healeys, Triumphs - etc. etc. etc.

Should you or any of your fellow automotive enthusiasts have interior wood trim in their vehicles....and IF that wood is having trouble.....I can help.

I have done my fair share of "wrenching" many years ago - but it is not my area of expertise so I really don't know for sure....It sounds like you did check out some things....I could take a guess at a couple tho..  Did you check the fuses...??  Could there be another relay...??  Did you smell anything burning or melting..?? Have you tried unplugging things to see if other things worked??  And lastly, and again, I am just guessing because I have never worked on that vehicle, But, is there a reset for the computer...??  I wouldn't think that the computer would control things like lights...

Hopefully someone can help you.  I wish you the best...

Thank you.

OH, and for what it is worth, I would think that you could find or order a Haynes or Chilton repair manual for your car, either from a local parts store or Amazon, or Borders or maybe on eBay etc. etc.  It would be a good idea to have one, if you are going to do mechanical work yourself.

OH, and also for what it is worth, I would think that you might want to search for a classic car club in your area, many folks in clubs are very helpful people and may be able to help you find your answer...making a friend or two in that "world" would be very helpful, especially if you are going to do mechanical work yourself.  Who knows, maybe one of those folks has had the same problem or can assist you personally with the answer to your question.

(I would appreciate you taking the time to Rate my response....thanks)

QUESTION: I did replace every fuse there were on the fuse box,and i did change a few relays, but i did not think to smell burnt/melted wire,u could be right! ill definitely go check up on that right away when i get to the car, thank you for your help.

P.S. i do have a manual for that certain car,but it dont help that much for that kind of problem.

Answer
Well Edward,

As I mentioned, your question was outside my area of expertise...but I gave you my best "common sense" guesses anyway.

Yes....maybe....if there is a burnt or shorted out wire, it might not allow a connection or recheck everything as it could be blowing a fuse or relay the moment you put it in.  Another thought would be to check ALL the grounding straps and cables....the ones from the engine to the body, the body to the chassis and the ones at the battery.

At this point, I'd try to find some Camaro car clubs online.  Maybe there is one near you...or maybe you could join their bulletin boards and post your question there.  Hopefully one of those folks can help you, after all, Camaros are their "babys".

Good luck...I have done the best I could for you.  And I would appreciate you rating my responses, thanks.

Happy Motoring,

Jeff
