Classic/Antique Car Repair: electric fuel pump, electric fuel pump, flathead v8

Question
I am rebuilding a 1948 F1 ford truck with a 239 flathead V8.  I had he enging rebuilt and was told I need to use a electric fuel pump because there is apparently a cam lobe missing to run the mechanical pump.  The question is how do I regulate the fuel from the electric pump under different engine operating conditions  Such as idle rpm and driving rpm. It seems that I will either starve the engine or flood the carb.  Thanks.

Consider this:

A mechanical pump has no regulation...even at idle, it delivers enough fuel to keep the float bowl filled; at higher rpm, using your reasoning, the carb would be flooded, but of course it isn't.

Answer: the float system and needle valve in the carb's float bowl keep the fuel in the carb at a preset level.

So, go ahead and install that electric fuel pump. Just remember to follow directions--the pump should be located as low down as possible as it pushes fuel to the carb---don't make it suck fuel up out of the tank or you'll have priming problems. And a remote switch and gravity switches are good ideas to prevent fires.
