Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1985 MB 380SL, 380sl, jump seat

Question
Vern -- I have an opportunity to get a maroon 1985 380SL w/92k miles for very little money ($2500)as a project with my teenage son. It needs slight body work - small dent rt fender & door and the top half was repainted black which is bubbling in a few spots. However, the interior is ruff - needs drivers seat replacement and rear jump seat will have to be replaced if I cant clean it up. It runs well but the A/C does not work. It could be just a recharge if I can find freon. I saw another of your answers that said these cars should be mechanically fine for 150k miles but how expensive may it be to fix the A/C and interior?

Thanks
Neil

Answer
Hi Neil:
I'm afraid this one may cost you a few buck to fix up. The most expensive
part on a MB is the A/C compressor. If it gone back, expect to spend $1200 to $1500
for a replacement...ouch! $2500 maybe a bit much for an '85 in that condition. You certainly want to have a mechanic look at it before you purchase.
