Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1970 MGB, replacing clutch, throwout bearing

Question
My clutch is making a grinding noise when I try to engage the clutch.  Does this mean the plates are worn and need replacing...?

Answer
Clutch or gearbox, Damian? If you're getting the grinding the gears noise, then it could be clutch, though your last couple of months using the car would have seen the clutch getting progressively worse, if it is in fact the clutch going--they don't go out all at once generally.

My bet is on the master or slave cylinders. One or both have a bad seal and need rebuilding. A much less daunting task.

Now, if it's a "bad bearing" grinding sort of noise, then it's your throwout bearing, in which case, do bite the bullet and replace clutch cover, plate, and bearing all at once as long as you've got the tranny out!

Good luck!
