Classic/Antique Car Repair: 2003 ford explorer issue, blown fuse, safety lock

Question
The gear shift will not come out of park, it is on the column and the wheel will not lock. Can you give suggestion

Answer
It could be the shift interlock system that prevents the gear shifter to be moved until the brake pedal is depressed and held. Check the owners manual and see if there is an override that you can activate to shift the car. Also the safety lock is operated through the stop light switch and circuit. A simple blown fuse in the stop light will cause this condition.
