Classic/Antique Car Repair: 65 chevy, chevy impala ss, chevy impala

Question
I have a 65 chevy impala ss with a 327 and my alternator was bad so i put a new one and the bat. and the regulator and i redid all the wiring for the car by the book .and i start it starts fine but when i took the bat. cable off the car turns  off what els could it be .

Answer
First off removing the battery cable with the engine running is not really a good idea. It can cause a spike in the voltage that can do damage to the diodes in the alternator.Second just because you replaced parts with new or rebuilt or used it does not mean that the parts are good and will work. Time to get a voltmeter out and check the wiring for voltage where it should be and to do an output test on the alternator. You say that you rewired, and if you let me know what alternator, model year and make, that you installed i can give you the test procedure.
