Classic/Antique Car Repair: 352, hydraulic valve lifters, ford engine

Question
Hi. I know this was a few years back, but I did a search and saw your post on a noise from the lifters. I was wondering if you had any advice. I have a 66 F100 with the exact same problem. Thanks for your time.

Answer
The 352 Ford engine was equipped with hydraulic valve lifters unlike its little brother the 332 that used adjustable lifters. As such and diagnosis involving noise lifters needs to start with an oil pressure test with a mechanical gage hooked into the main oil galley. If the pressure is low then that needs to be addressed first. If the pressure is up to say 40 psi at 1500 RPM then remove the valve covers and start there checking the rockers and push rods. Make sure oil is getting to the rockers and that there is no free movement. Let me know what is happening.
