Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1989 jaguar xj6, 1989 jaguar xj6, wood veneer

Question
im having problems removing the wood in the ski slope console on my 1989 xj6! it seems to be glued in.i dont want to force things and tear it up!is there a simple way to do this without having to remove the whole console?your help is greatly appreciated! thanks!

Answer
Hello William,

YES, you are correct.  The construction of that console is a 3 part "sandwich" if you will.  And over time, that style of construction typically starts to have problems..no matter the manufacturer.  Usually the veneer starts to delaminate and the clear starts to crack and then things start to get pretty ugly.

The first layer is the base, which is made out of Steel.

The second layer is the wood veneer, which is specially bonded to the Steel.

The third layer is the clear Topcoat.

If you are wanting to restore your console, you need to remove the whole unit.

If you would like to email me directly at restoration@maderaconcepts.com, I would be glad to send you step by step instructions on how to remove that console...and if you want to call me at 805-962-1579 after 7am pacific time, we could go into more details regarding restoration option if you wish.
