Classic/Antique Car Repair: power steering problem, Power Steering fluid boils

Question
I have a 1965 El Camino and every time I turn the car off, the power steering boils over.  I can not figure out where is coming from, could it come from the wheel box?

Answer
This is a strange one - new one to me.

I suspect you have the wrong steering fluid in your system.  Disconnect both hoses from the pump, and feed them through the suspension to the ground so they will drain by gravity.  Start the engine for a few seconds to purge the fluid from the pump - don't let it run long because the pump uses the fluid for cooling.

Then, refill the system with the correct fluid, which is automatic transmission fluid, the same as is used in your transmission (assuming it has Powerglide).   The fluid is called Dexron/Mercon III - and is available from any supermarket or parts store.  Do NOT use "power steering" fluid - that is for much later cars.

If that doesn't cure it, write me again and I'll think some more on it.
