Question
QUESTION: GOOD MORNING DICK: HOW WAS YOUR TRIP TO SACRAMENTO FOR THE IMPERIAL CLUB ANNUAL MEETING? WELL DICK I RESEARCHED THE VIN FOR RYAN'S 67 NEWPORT AND IT SAID THE MOTOR WAS " HIGH PERFORMANCE " I COULD NOT FIND ANY NUMBERS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BLOCK. I DID SEE THE #5 ON THE LEFT SIDE.AM I LOOKING IN THE RIGHT PLACE? ALSO, HIS  FUEL PUMP IS LEAKING FROM THE PEEP HOLE AND NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. NO BIG DEAL RIGHT ? TAKE OFF THE FUEL LINES AND TWO BOLTS AND ITS OUT...  HERES MY PROBLEM- I CAN'T SEEM TO GET THE NEW PUMP MOUNTED FLUSH WITH THE TWO BOLT HOLES LINED UP. I WAS ABLE TO GET THE PUMP IN ALL THE WAY BUT THEN THE BOLTS WEREN'T LINED UP! I tried TURNING THE CRANK WITH MY BREAKER BAR THINKING IF I MOVED THE LOBE A TOUCH IT WOULD LINE UP , NO LUCK... ANY THOUGHTS ON HOW I CAN GET THIS PUMP BACK IN OUR BEAST ? ALSO THE NEW PUMP SEEMS TO BE A IDENTICAL MATCH.SHOULD I TRY ANOTHER PUMP OR AM I JUST DOING SOMETHING WRONG.THE NEW FUEL PUMP IS MADE BY AIRTEX-PART NUMBER 267. I COULD NOT FIND A O.E.M. PUMP HERE. SHOULD  I KEEP HUNTING FOR A O.E.M. PUMP ?

ANSWER: You are welcome - that is what I am here for.

Our trip was very nice - as far as the driving up and back (about 1050 miles), and the side events planned for the attendees were very interesting.  However, we had rain all 3 days, so the show attendance was way down - and my wife and I spent most of our time at the show sitting in the car with the radio and the AC going (not that it was hot, but we needed the auto-temp system going to keep the windows from fogging up and to keep it from getting too humid in there.)   For scenery, we gazed at the dripping trees through our moon roof!

But the meetings, banquets and times spent with old friends was very nice!   We didn't take the 67 because of the predicted rain - we took the '81 - for that reason and because it is a great long distance cruiser (and gets 22 MPG on the road!)

To install the fuel pump, you've done everything right except for one thing - you have to push the actuating push rod up out of the way with the pump arm as you insert the pump - otherwise the rod, which falls down and blocks entry when you remove the old pump, will prevent getting the new pump positioned correctly so the rod pushes down on the arm, and the bolts line up.

If you have difficulty doing this, you can remove the plug from the block below the fuel pump opening, and use a pencil or some other long device to hold the rod up out of the way, but usually you can maneuver the pump arm in to do the same thing.

I don't know what the '5' signifies - that's a new one on me.  I also don't know why the block ID numbers didn't show up on the block - the fact that you did find a stamped number tells us that you are looking in the right place - so we have a mystery at the moment.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: DICK - THANKS FOR YOUR ADVICE ON GETTING THE FUEL PUMP IN OUR 67 NEWPORT,FOR SOME REASON I HAD TO PULL THE PLUG OUT OF THE BOTTOM AND PUSH THE ROD UP AND THEN THE PUMP BOLTED RIGHT UP.
DICK,MY FOLLOW UP QUESTION IS ABOUT THE TRANSMISSION MOUNT.
WE JACKED UP THE TRANSMISSION ALL THE WAY AND COULD NOT GET THE OLD MOUNT OUT.WE THEN TOOK OFF THE DRIVE SHAFT TO SEE IF THAT WOULD HELP.NO LUCK! DOES THIS REQUIRE THE TRANSMISSION TO BE TAKEN OUT OR SPLIT TO GET THE ROOM WE NEED?ALSO IS ATF+4 A SUITABLE FLUID FOR THIS TRANNY?
THANKS AGAIN DICK FOR YOUR HELP WITH THESE ISSUE'S.

Answer
I don't recall any problem getting the rear trans mount in or out of my car, but take a look at the pictures I posted at my write up on my 67.  Look at
http://www.imperialclub.com/Yr/1967/DickBsRefurb/

and scroll down to the engine installation section, then click on the thumbnail showing the trans mount and crossmember ready to install. That picture is at

If you have the crossmember out, the transmission mount should just unbolt from the trans and drop out in your hand.  I don't know if you can do this without removing the crossmember - but that is pretty easy.

Any automatic transmission fluid that says "Dexron/Mercon III" or equivalent is right for your car.   I assume the ATF+4 A is another way of saying the same thing, but I have not run into that exact lable.  The only fluid to avoid is that for some much newer vehicles, or any that says "type F" on it.
