Nissan Repair: service engine soon light, engine management system, nissan altima

I have a 1999 Nissan Altima with 143,000 miles; never really had any trouble with the car.  Yet at about 142,995 miles, my 'service engine soon' light came on.  Is this just a routine check light that comes on at a specific mileage or do I have a sensor or something else going out?  And is this anything to really be concerned about?

The check engine light means that there is something that is not working properly.  Go to Autozone or Checker and they will read the code for free.  With the miles on the car it could be most anything on the computer controlled engine management system.
