Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1968 camaro startup problem, 1968 camaro, float bowl

Question
QUESTION: My 327 was rebuild to GM specs. when I set the timing dwell and rpms I set them to specs. the carb is a new GM rebuild. when I go to start the car it cranks for a long time before it will start. The shop I take it to for inspections told me to advance the timing. I don't understand why I should have to do this the engine only has 200 miles on it. I'm done everything twice and nothing seems to help

ANSWER: How does it run once started?

QUESTION: It runs well, good pick up no stalling

Answer
If it runs good when started it does not sound like advancing the timing is the right move. I would check the points to make sure that they are not slightly burned and then look at the carburetor. Make sure the choke is closing when the engine is cold and that the float bowl is not emptying when shut down. It also could be that the engine is tight and turning over slower than normal and will loosen up as it breaks in.
