Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1929 Model A Roadster engine block repair, lt ft, good luck jack

Question
QUESTION: Actually have two questions:

1)  What is the torque for the engine block when repairing a cracked block?

2)  When putting on the gasket, do I need any adhesive needing to be applied, or is this just a "put the gasket into place and tighten it down" repair?

ANSWER: The torque for the head bolts is 55 ft #, but you should follow the correct sequence.  Also, retorque after you have driven it a little, and then again in a few weeks or months.
You need to get the model A mechanics handbook.  About $35 from MARC or one of the A parts suppliers.  It will tell you all you need to know.  We all have it and use it all the time.
On your second question, I do use that spray on "adhesive", but many people say not to use anything.  I spray both sides of the gasket, then put it on.  Any parts store has it.  Ask them.
You will have more fun with that A if you join a local A club.
Get the book so you can fix anything that goes wrong.
Good luck

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: Thanks, Jack...This was my dad's car which I inherited.  It's kind of strange, his name was Jack, also.

As a follow up, can you tell me what the correct sequence is and what the torque would be for the head as well?

Thank you.

John

Answer
That torque I gave you was for the head, but be very careful with the two bolts up front.  That goose neck will crack very easy.  Some of us don't use a gasket on it, just a little rtv and tighten to about 45 ft. # and be done with it.  On the sequence:  I'll try, but it is a pattern.  You really need the book.  They are numbered 1 to 14  All this is relative to the # 1 bolt.
1 is in the center, 2 is to the left of that, facing front of car (foc). 3 is to the right and toward foc. 4 is to the left and toward roc, 5 is to the left and toward the foc, 6 is to the right and toward roc, 7 is toward the foc.8 is toward roc, 9 is right side up by the front corner, 10 is at the lt rr corner, 11 is at the lt ft corner, 12 is on the rt side toward the rt rr corner, 13 is at the ft center, and 14 is at the rr center,
Draw yourself a picture and follow that sequence.
Good luck
