hi there , could you tell me if a 3 speed overdrive from a 60 fairlane with a 292 will work on my 62 falcon 170 6 cyl ?

In 1960, Fairlane was a model name for a full size Ford.  The first compact car called a Fairlane came out in 1962.  

I doubt very much that a transmission from the big car with a V8 engine would fit your Ranchero.  The transmission number is C2AZ-7003B for the 62 full sized car with the 292 V8.  The transmission you need is a C3OZ-7003G.  My books do not show the part number for the 1960 Fairlane transmission, but from the detailed parts list, I can tell that it is almost identical to the 1962 full sized Ford, so it isn't likely to fit your car.  If you want to be absolutely sure, you should contact a manual transmission repair shop and ask them what the differences are.
