Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1965 VW - seat belts, phillips head screws, diameter holes

QUESTION: I just bought a 1965 VW bug and the wipers do not move when switched on, unless manually forced.  Then they make one complete movement and stop, until forced again.  I think the linkage may need adjustment...? Any suggestions... I tried WD40 but nothing changed.  Thanks, Bob

ANSWER: There's little to adjust in the linkage, but a bent connector (look under the dash...) may cause them to jam. Also, too much play in the same connector could be the culprit. Lastly the switch itself could be at fault, or the parking mechanism on the motor.

QUESTION: There is a cover over the linkage is that easy to remove to see the connector arms?  Can you tell me how to do it...?  Thanks, Bob

ANSWER: If you're talking about that full-width sculpted black fiberboard cover, I'm surprised it's still there...most are gone after all this time. You'll find two Phillips-head screws at the very top; just remove those and shift it downward.

The wiper mechanism just hangs down from one bracket and the two wiper-arm nuts.

QUESTION: I need to install seat (lap) belts in the back seat of the 65 bug.  Where should I drill the holes?  Are there any diagrams?  Thanks, Bob

I don't have a '65 sitting in my office at the moment, BUT there are a quartet of threaded holes for just this purpose, in the floor pan of your '65, with plugs in them. On a '65, these will be large (about 25mm) diameter holes and they will have big metric threads. The factory belts for the '65 have long been unavailable, but Wolfsburg West sells great replicas, along with adapter bushings to adapt those huge holes to their own, and also many other brands, of modern belts.

Why not buy your belts from WW as well? They've got some that are tailored to fit, and you can get the bushings, too, in the same shopping trip!
