Classic/Antique Car Repair: Removing head, nuts and bolts, wd 40

Question
QUESTION: Hi Jack,
I have 3 "A"'s.  Two have been running for years and one has not run for about 10 or 15 years.  This one is now my project.
My problem is that when trying to remove the distributor with a ball joint tool it seemed to be slowly coming out of the head but it was the internal shaft that was coming out of the bottom of the dist.  I now have a broken part of the dist. stuck in the head.  It seperated flush with the head.  I thought of a couple of things but quickly dismissed them.  One, me being a pipefitter, was to try an easy out.  However I would assume that anything stuck so badly that it just seperated itself into two parts that an easy out would probably not work.  The only other thing I could think of would be to remove the head and try and knock out the broken piece, which is probably and inch or longer, or take the head to a machine shop and have it drilled out.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thank you, another "A" enthusiast.
Ron

ANSWER: Well, I have never heard of this one.  The dist just sits on the head as you know.  There is not much there to make it stick.  If you take the head off, it should be easy to get it out.  I would hit it with a lot of wd 40 and liquid wrench and see it that will do it.  YOu could put a little heat on the head in that area and see if that might loosen it.  Put a cold wet rag on the dist so it does not expand.  Since you have this prob, my guess is that you will have trouble getting the head off.  If you do, get back to me on that problem.  I have some ideas there.
Good luck and let me know how you make out.

QUESTION: Hello again Jack,
I assume that the head is pretty well frozen onto the block and seeing it will be a couple of days before I can get to it I would appreciate it if you could give me the advice you offered in the event I do have a problem removing the head.  I have already wd 40'd the nuts and bolts for the head, the goose neck and the water pump in the hopes it will help when I tackle the job.
I want to thank you for such a quick response and advice offered.
Sincerely,  Ron

Answer
The best advice I can give you is that you will have to "worry"it off the block.  Have patience and just stay with it.  Use several small screw drivers and putty knives to work your way around it.  Be careful not to damage the head or crack it.  Have some oak dowels or wook scraps ready to put in the crack when you do get it raised a little.  Another trik is to stuff in a soft rope into the plug holes and turn the engine and have the pistons push it up against the rope.  It will come off.
