Classic/Antique Car Repair: Question on electrical wiring - 64 F100 PU, asbestos insulation, flexible plastic

Question
Brad,

Recently, I was under my 64 Ford F100, looking over the electrical wiring that runs back to my tailights etc.  All of the wiring needs replaced. (No funds right now)

So, as I looked at some of the frayed wiring, I decided to wrap some of that flexible plastic covering over where the wiring was frayed.  And held it on with electrical tape.  The question ----- Have I made the problem better ??  (I actually covered most of the wires)  Also, does the wiring have asbestos insulation on it ??  Thanks.

John

Answer
I think you might have created a problem. each wire needs to be repaired with tape covering the bare spots before putting it into a loom of any kind. The bare sports on the wires can still come in contact with another wire with a bare spot and cause a short circuit. There should be zero asbestos in the covering on the wires.
