Classic/Antique Car Repair: 87 Buick steering column not centered, buick grand national, 1987 buick grand national

Question
Hey, Vern,
Hope you can shed some light on my problem. I have a 1987 Buick Grand National (about a month now), and the entire steering column is slanted to the left. I'd say about 1/2" compared to the dash trim around the column. Is there an adjustment somewhere I can make, or does this indicate serious damage somewhere?
THX!

Answer
Hi Jeff:
Sounds like the car has been in an accident. Check for damage under the hood just below the Master Cylinder. That is where the steering column leads to your rack. Also, check your front fender paint against the hood and door paint (do this in the sun light) to see if they match exactly. If not, there was damage that someone fail to repair.

If the car was hit hard enough to bend the steering column, there is a good chance the frame may be bent as well. Get on your knees behind the tail light and sight down the side of the car with one eye just like you was firing a rifle. If the frame is bent, you should be able to see it. Also have someone else drive the car while your follow behind. See if the car is running a bit side way as it travels down the road.
