Classic/Antique Car Repair: ignition switch disassembly, lock cylinder, key switch

Question
Dick, I have a 1940 Buick Special ignition switch in my hand.  I am trying to generate a replacement key for the ignition.  No code stamped into the metal anywhere.  I can separate the key switch portion from the electrical contact housing (three crimps - easy to bend back).  The switch freely turns about 15 degrees without a key in it.  How do I further disassemble this ignition to remove the plug to generate a replacement key?

Answer
You cannot get it apart if you don't have the key.  If you have the key, you can stick a pin in the hole in the face next to the keyslot and turn the inner part of the switch past the normal stop with the pin depressing a catch inside the lock, then the lock cylinder will come out in your hand.

If you don't have the key, you'll have to take the assembly to a locksmith - he can make a key for it without taking it apart, or he can get it apart if he has to.

1940 Buicks allowed you to remove the key without locking the ignition - so you can operate the car without the key if it has not been locked - that is why you can turn it without the key inserted. Some Chevrolets were that way up into the early 60s.
