Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1981 Buick Regal, buick regal, internal fan

Question
QUESTION: The blower motor for the regal started to make noises and after a few minutes I could smell burning rubber. Any ideas?
Thank You!

ANSWER: I believe you mean the A/C compressor.  It is likely the bearings have seized on the clutch/pulley.  You should be able to replace replace this, otherwise the entire compressor.  In the mean time you should remove the drive belt because it is not moving and could possibly start a fire before it completely breaks.  If this belt also drives the alternator and/or power steering, the car will be down until the repairs, or you can get a temporary smaller belt and bypass the compressor for now.

QUESTION: Does that mean I can remove one of the 3 belts that are on the car? Which one would it be?

Answer
Not being there, I can only guess it's the A/C compressor.  However, it could be any of the pulleys; the alternator, the water pump or the power steering pump.  Get a friend who is a little familiar with these components and you should be able to pin it down quickly. Looking under the hood when the car is running, you would normally see all belts moving.  I would have someone crank the engine briefly while you look under the hood; you should see the belt which is stuck, not moving.  I will likely be screeching loudly and may start smoking, it's not likely to cause any permanent damage, but shut it off as quickly as possible.  Also, even if the belt has not broken, you'll want a new belt once you fix the bad component.

I had a thought; when you said "blower motor" perhaps you meant the internal fan which supplies air to your vents.  If so, that could mean the fan windings have melted down, causing the smell you described as "burning rubber".
