Classic/Antique Car Repair: 62 impala tranny fluid leak, 283 engine, fluid leak

Question
Hi, I have a 62 impala with a 283 engine.  It leaks transmission fluid when in park.  I was told by a mechanic that the seal is bad.  I am wondering how would I go about changing the seal myself?  Or do you suggest that have a professional do the work?  I have no mechanic experience.
Thank you,
Ben

Answer
Hi Ben:
With no mechanic experience, I think you answered you own question. however, before spending any money, let's make sure you've got a real problem. A transmission leak can mean a couple of things.

1. The seals are dry due to lack of driving. If you don't drive her very often, and she only leak a bit (e.g. a table spoonful or so), you may want to try Lucas or Bar Stop-Leak for transmission.

2. Also, make sure the transmission isn't over full. Check it after driving for 15 to 20 minutes when its good and hot. That is the only way to check transmission on these cars.
