Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1965 corvette, blown head gasket, good luck jack

Question
QUESTION: Corvette gets hot after it is running for a short time.  Everything that could be fixed to correct this has been done, including a new radiator, alternator, etc.  It does have a cam that someone put in before we owned it.  The car runs great, sounds great otherwise.  My husband is desperate for help on this one, on what could be causing it to overheat.

ANSWER: I am a Model A guy, but I will give this a try.  The new radiator helps, assuming it did not get plugged up from junk in the water jacket when you first put it on.  If that happened, you have a very expensive filter.  Assume it is OK and of the proper size.  Make sure the head is torqued to spec.  If combustion products blow into the water jacket, this can add a lot of heat to the water.
check the water pump impeller.  Make sure it is not loose on the pump shaft.  Poor timing can cause overheating, but since it runs good, your timing is probably OK.  Make sure you have the correct pressure cap on and that it is working.
Beyond this, it could be a cracked block letting combustion into the water jacket.  Hope it is not that.  Check the compression on each cylinder.
Hey, it could be a broken head gasket.  Big job, but not serious.
Make sure the radiator is the correct size.  Someone could have put on a small one.
Hope some of this helps.
Good luck.

QUESTION: I just want to add, that the engine is a 327/350 horse, someone put in before us solid lifters w/a solid lift hyeration cam.  I am sure I am not spelling this right, but I tried. Water pump is new and cap for new radiator was new.  Radiator was bought at Volunteer Corvette for this year and specs.  This was only put in after the problem has not stopped. Hope it is not the other things.

Answer
Be careful assuming that the new parts are good.  I got bit on time assuming a condenser was good and it drove me crazy.  The pump, cap and radiator are probably OK.  Lets hope it is just a blown head gasket.  Check that compression.
Good luck

One other thing it might be is a cracked head.
For a cracked head, block or blown gasket, rev the engine with the rad cap off and see if there are any bubbles coming to the surface.  There should be no bubbles.
