Auto Parts: 2001 4x4 Ford Exp. leaking rear end cover, 4x4 ford, pep boys

Question
Okay I was having some noise in the rear end and looked under and noticed that it was leaking oil. I don't have a drain plug to drain so I took off the cover and the gear oil came out. Okay my problem is how do I put the oil back in with out a fill plug? Some one told me to put four quarts of gear oil in a zip lock bag and put all the bolts back on, is this true or were they pulling my leg? Please help

Answer
Hi Debbie,

Oh man, you got some ripe friends there, that's for sure. Had me laughing so hard I almost cracked a rib. NOT at YOU, at the ziplock bag idea. Your rear oil at times can exceed the melting temp of plastic so it would be my guess that they were pulling your leg on that one whether THEY know it or not. Next time you see them, just laugh at them, you'll understand why even if they don't.

Ok, enough of that, on to your answer which is why you asked the question as it certainly was not to be made fun of. I'm not poking fun at you though, I'm directing my poking at whomever gave you that advice.

On the other side of the rear end housing there is a small plug usually with a 3/8" square hole in the center. Remove the plug with a 3/8" ratchet and 3 inch extension and fill with 80W-90 gear oil until it starts to spill out. Replace the plug and you're good to go.

Looking for a reputable service technician? My advice on finding a good technician is: Steer clear of the dealership and 'chain' stores like Firestone, Sears, Pep Boys, Monro Muffler/Brake, Midas, etc. as they usually only employ ONE ASE Certified Tech just so they can say they do and chances are, that guy is the asst. manager or manager and is not in the store to diagnose/repair vehicles anyway. Find a service location in the link below or get some names out of the yellow-pages and do a drive-by. Garages that employ ASE Certified Technicians will be marked with the 'Blue-Seal' insignia. If unsure about whether a place employs Certified Techs, just ask to see their credentials. ALL ASE Certified Technicians will be PROUD to show and display their certificate(s).

Thanks for the question, I hope this information was helpful to you.
