Classic/Antique Car Repair: Rear Seal 1949 Pontiac, steering linkage, rear seal

Question
How big of a job is it to replace the rear seal in a 194 six in  a 1949 Pontiac?

Answer
Removing the oil pan is a major pain in the you know where. The recommended procedure is to remove the water pump, cylinder head, and drop the steering linkage. Then loosen the front motor mount and jack the engine up and place a 2 1/2 inch block under the engine. If you do not remove the cylinder head it will hit the fire wall. Remove the flywheel cover. Then unbolt the pan and snake it out. Some times you will have to remove one or both of the engine splash pans beside the engine. Then drop the rear main and replace the seal. It is a lot of work on your back unless you have a lift.
