Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1948 chevrolet starting prblem, compression test, starter motor

Question
Hello Dick,
I hope you can help me. I live in Australia and own a 1948 Chevrolet. My problem is this, When my car is cold in the morning , it starts real easy. However after driving it for a while and it warms up, I cannot start it again until it cools down. The battery is OK, there is no fuel vapor problem, I have had the starter motor checked. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Ron

Answer
You've already ruled out the two usual causes of the problem, but if you give me a bit more information, perhaps I can be of some help.

Question 1:  When it refuses to start, do you notice that the cranking is slower than normal?  If it is cranking at normal speed, go to #2.

Question 2:   When it refuses to start, have you tried putting a few ounces of liquid gas down the carburetor, and then re-trying to start it.  If not, do that and report what happens.  If that doesn't start it, go to #3.

Question 3:  Have you done a compression test on the engine?  If so, what are the results?  If not, do one - you may have low compression, and that always causes warm starting problems.

I'll wait for your reply, then offer more advice.

Dick
