Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1956 Cadillac transmission not shifting correctly, dirty overalls, cadillac series

Question
Hi, I have a 56 Cadillac series 62 factory stock 365 engine with auto trans with no a/cond. , it runs ok except the trans shifts hard coming out of second gear, it doesnt shift til about 35 mph, it doesnt slip or make any noises , the trans was serviced recently with new filter and fluid also the fluid that was drained didn't smell burnt and was relatively clean and not dark ,  my question is , Is this normal or can the trans be adjusted or is there another common cause for this.  NOTE ! one other thing the car wasn't driven for approx. 30 years . Thank's kindly Bill in West Virginia

Answer
That sounds like the trans should be evaluated by someone with more experience than I.  I had a 55 Coupe DeVille for years, but that is a different design transmission; rough upshifts were normal for that car, especially the 1-2 upshift.  In the trade it was called the "4 jerk Hydro".

But in 56, they softened the shifts.  My guess is that your throttle pressure adjustment is off, but I advise you to take the car to a shop which has been in business for at least 30 years, privately owned, (not one of the chains that advertise on TV!!!), and has mechanics that are surly, wear dirty overalls, have grease under their fingernails, and gray hair (all of which also describes me!).  They will drive the car, get grease on the steering wheel, and tell you what is wrong, and fix it for you if is is rougher than normal.
