Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1937 buick, 15 inch rims, stock rims

Question
Hi:  I currently have the stock 6:50 x 16"  bias tires on my car. I am thinking I might replace these tires with radial tires.  The standard rims are split rims. My questions are:  1. Is the cars stock  suspension suited to this change in tires?   2. The stock rims are split rims - is this a problem - will I have to change the rims?  3. If I have to change the rims - can you recommend any rim type from another car/truck?   3. What radial tire size would you recommend?
Thank you in advance for any assistance.

Answer
I've used radial tires on many old cars. There is no particular reason to worry about compatibility with the suspension, although the ride will be a little harsh at low speeds, and the steering will be MUCH harder, especially in parking.

One problem is the fact that radials put more stress on the wheels, and since your present wheels are old and narrow, and also 16" diameter, that is going to make the tires wear rapidly, and also the selection of old car looking whitewalls is much better for 15 inch rims.  My advice, if you want to do this, is to get newer rims that fit the bolt circle for your car, in a 15X6 size (15 inch diameter, 6 inch wide rims) or better yet 15X7 wheels - then you can put 235/75R15 tires on it - they will look a bit modern, but they will be adequate for the weight of the car, and will drive really nicely at highway speeds.  Most sizes are available in radials from the various old car tire suppliers.

Parking with radials will be tough, though, and the car will sit about 2 inches closer to the ground; it's up to you.

I'm surprised that your car has "split rims", those were mostly used on much older cars and on trucks up into the 50s - not on late 30s passenger cars.   If it has split rims, they are not original to the car, and they are very dangerous - so lose them for sure!

Split rims have two pieces.  The tires are held on by a split ring, that is pounded into the wheel flange to lock the tires on to the rim - if that is what is on it, someone has been fiddling with the car!  Many folks have been seriously injured by these wheels!
