Classic/Antique Car Repair: 94 E-150 Ford, coolant leaks, haynes manual

Question
Bought this in Sept.'07.  Runs good.
Problem is with "over-cooling" (or so I've been told)
Sometimes the heat will work; blower runs-plenty of heat.
sometimes - I can run the van all day without any heat from the blower.  I changed the T-stat(advice from a back-alley mechanic)since the "Check Engine" light was coming on/goin off/coming back on and Haynes manual mentioned "over-cooling" because of (probable) open T-stat.
Plenty of coolant in system; flushed the system(3mos ago.  No coolant leaks and the system holds (maintains) 15lbs. pressure.
Looking for some advice or another place to start.
Thanks.
Walt

Answer
you did not mention what temp themostat you put in. Also, the heat could be a vent door (vacuum operated) or the heater temperature selector switch as well as no engine heat, HOWEVER, I believe even at a reduced temp you would feel heat in the cabin.

did you check actual water flow returning from the top of engine. If your water pump is not circulating water, it would produce all of the symptoms you have mentioned. When you personally stand at the engine with the hood up is it hot or cool?
