Classic/Antique Car Repair: steering box, shift mechanism, steering box


Question
1948 chevy need to remove the steering box and put new one in. cant get the steering shaft out of the box ,or does the shaft come out all in one....?  have box all undone just cant get the steering shaft out.?
AND will 1948- 1952 chevy fit..? steering box

Answer
You have to remove the whole assembly up through the inside of the car. Don't try to take it apart - change the whole thing.  You can pull the steering wheel off to make the job a little bit easier.

The part numbers are different between 48 and 52, but it might fit, although the shift mechanism will have to be swapped.   Just look at it and measure before you start the job - that is all I could do if I were trying this swap.  My advice is to get the exact right one, if you can find it.
