Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1963 Impala 283, jumper wire, backup lights

Question
My headlights on mu Impala work, than they do not work. I turn on my headlights low/high beam work fine. Come back in 2 days low/high do not work. Change dimmer switch did not change anything. Put in new headlight switch all work. Come back in 2-3 days only high beam works. Drive to work about 20 miles away and try them again low/high beam work now both work. What is going here? Now there are no backup lights, any ideas?

Answer
Sounds like the annoying elusive ground monster has go you. It is harder to locate because with voltage you can just see if it is there or not. Finding a bad ground is a little harder.

First, run a temporary jumper wire to ground on each of your lighting fixtures and see if the problem goes away. Then, if it does, you can remove them one at a time to find the problem. Then, you can decide to fix it or just live with the temp. ground wire.
