Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1966 Mustang problems, foot on the gas, jerks

Question
I have a 1966 Mustang with the 200 cid straight 6 engine and the C4 automatic transmision.  Every time I start it blows out gray/black smoke and I need to keep my foot on the gas till it warms up.  Then when I put it in reverse to back out of the drive it jerks, makes a bang, and then stalls.  Also when I get it into drive and get to a stop, if I take my foot off the gas it dies..  I think it might be the idle speed, because it sounds like it is idling fast.  If it is, how do I adjust the idle speed?

Answer
Sounds like your automatic choke is giving you grief. You should first try cleaning it very thoroughly with spray carb cleaner inside and out of carb (read can directions). Then if you still have hi-idle issues, there is a cam attached to the choke linkage that is really easy to understand by moving the throttle and the choke by hand and watching their interaction.
