Classic/Antique Car Repair: 74 F100 Steering Wheel Removal, ford f100, steering wheel puller

Question
Tazz, I have been trying to remove the steering wheel of a '74 Ford F100 Styleside 2WD. I have tried a steering wheel puller and several different gear pullers with no luck. I am thinking this should not be this hard! At this point, I am afraid of damaging the end of the steering shaft. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Answer
A puller is the only way and unfortunately you can't use heat. Next time, put it in a 'bind' with the puller and then give a sharp rap to the shaft pushing on the rod with a hammer. One sharp blow should make the wheel pop up. Make sure you have the proper cap on the tip of the wheel puller.

Also, just a side point, make sure you are using a puller designed for steering wheels. There IS a difference.
