Classic/Antique Car Repair: VIN location on a 1964 Riviera, state highway patrol, door hinge

Question
Can you tell me where the VIN is located and how it is attached?

Thanks in advance

Answer
Unless the car has been tampered with, it is on the plate attached to the driver's door hinge post.  The plate should be either spot welded to the hinge post, or affixed with special "rosette" rivets, used only for this purpose.

There is also a secret location under the car where the VIN is stamped on the frame, but you will have to contact a state highway patrol office to have someone check it for you - they will not tell you where to look for it.   In California, we have to make an appointment at a CHP office, and an officer will check it to see if it matches the paperwork on the car. If it doesn't, they will check all states for a report of theft.
