Classic/Antique Car Repair: Repair/restoring 64 Rambler, christian business directory, mounting brackets

Question
Hi. I have a 64 Rambler convertible and no where to work on it. I'd like to get
it "restored" - it has some body damage - and running better, but need
advice about finding someone to do the work.

Specifically - I want the mechanical repairs and bodywork done, not frame-off
show quality restoration. What kind of shop should I be looking for & what is
the right terminology for that? And any tips on finding a shop?

Thank you!

Answer
Look for a privately owned. but experienced shop. If they are dealer related or advertise heavily on insurance work, I would steer clear.

I think your terminology is fine. Use the term "fixed up" instead of "restored", restored has a different meaning. Tell them exactly what you want and that you want nothing more. Also, get estimates and 'right to refusal' upfront. But remember, even an honest shop can remove a fender and find cancerous rust in the mounting brackets. It happens. Don't think just because they look and it is more, that they are immediately trying to get to you. Does what they find directly relate to what they were supposed to be fixing? I know a lot of shops that while working on brakes, mention you need shocks. Well, that is probably true, but it is not what you asked them to repair. However if you are replacing the muffler and the pipe it is attaching to is shot, that make sense.

Ask around to people in your area with cars they have had repaired. Working single mothers have usually had their car worked on, and can't afford much. We have a Christian business directory in our area. I would definely search it out where you are.
