Classic/Antique Car Repair: about vin number, 1967 ford mustang, inch stroke

Question
i have what i think is a 1967 ford mustang with a 289. but i am confused on two things. the first one is i can't find the vin number to be sure what year or engine it has. and the other question is the block is stamped 302 but the heads are stamped 289, so how do i know what engine it really is, and were is the vin located.

Answer
The VIN is stamped on a metal plate that is on the rear of the driver's door.  The engine code is the last letter of the VIN.  The 289 is either a C, an A or a K, depending on which carburetor and performance engine it is.  There was no 302 in 1967, so if your car has a 302, it is not the original engine.

If you are not sure it is a 67, look at the fenders to see if there are side marker lights.  67 was the last year that did NOT have the side marker lights.

So many of these cars have been taken apart and put back together with parts from other cars that you may not know for sure which engine you have unless you take either the oil pan down or one of the heads off and measure the stroke.  The 302 has a 3 inch stroke, the 289 has a 2.87" stroke.

The other thing you can do is find the casting number on the block and do a Google search with that number - you will find what it fits.

Sorry I can't be more help.
