Land Rover Repair: abs / traction control / descent warning lights disco 2 1999 t registered V8, los 3 amigos, silly excuse

Question
I am stuck on this one, everyone says put a new hub on this car, to make the 1999 disco abs/traction control and descent lights go out! what a stupid way forward? there must be a lot of enquiries about this problem, can you help please?
I have been told that cheap brake pads could be at fault? I usually diagnose a fault before replacing parts, is there any expert on your site that can help with this?   or do i have to replace everything at my expense until the problem is cured?  thank you

Answer
Hi D,

si..si... los 3 amigos...

sounds like you've been to a LR dealer.  They rarely admit that the ABS, TC and HDC light problem exists.  Gee...I wonder why?  Maybe one day LR will admit that this is a problem...until then...

"We ride!"

So many series II owners ask about this problem.  I've heard the comment that 3rd party brake pads are the cause...unless they are the cheapest pads on the market, I doubt this very much.  I've been lucky to tour some brake pad plants and the standards that they hold are very impressive.

The theory is that 3rd party pads vibrate and thus cause confusion for the wheel sensor.  A silly excuse meant to confound and confuse most owners.

More likely its the ABS modulator, one of it's components, a wheel sensor or somewhere in the wiring.  There are so many components involved that (my guess is) dealers throw everything at it in attempts to fix it.  An OBDII reader can reveal possible areas of fault but it probably takes alot of patient searching and testing to find the cause.

Here's a thought.  BEFORE you have it serviced, have the dealership sign a contract that states:  "IF you install a new hub and the lights return within 6 months, you must fully refund the bogus repair".  I doubt they'll go for this.

Best of luck,

JohnMc
