Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1954 CHEVY 3100 PICK-UP, clock repairman, odometer

Question
QUESTION: The speedometer on my truck does not work. I removed it from the dashboard.  The cable is fine, but the needle that indicates your speed as you drive was completely off and the odometer no longer works.  What can you tell me about cleaning, repairs and lubrication of the speedometer.  Thank you for your help.

ANSWER: The speedometer/odometer is a form of clock, and we always left it to the clock repairmen. They were very plentiful back then and it was easier just to change them out.

QUESTION: You didn't answer my question.  All you did was tell me to try to locate a replacement odometer.  I knew that I had that as an option before I inquired with your web-site. I will try to be cleared in my explanation of what information that I am loking for and what I want to do. I simply want to fix the odometer myself, but I need some advice as how to repair it, how to clean it with whatever cleaning agents, and specifically what type of lubricant to use after the odometer is repaired and cleaned.  I want to do this myself. I hope that you understand what I am asking.  I just want to do the job myself and learn something new.  That's all. Thank you again for your help and I'm sorry that I wasn't clear when I inquired the first time.

Answer
I am sorry you did not read my answer, let me try to make it clearer. Not once did I suggest you find a replacement and don't know what chances you would have finding a working one these days. What I did tell you was ...The speedometer/odometer is a form of clock, and WE always left it to the clock repairmen.......also, BACK THEN, they were very plentifuland it was easier just to change them out THEREFORE we never learned what cleaner or oil or anything to work on them with.

I have no expertise in that area and it would be wrong to give you advise on something I have not tried and proven myself. Expert means just that, not speculator.

You may however, check with a local clock repairman and see what he would recommend to clean it with,.

I am all for people doing things themselves, but I will never give advise on a task that I have nopt done myself.

Hope that is clearer now.
