Classic/Antique Car Repair: Compression test, mercedes 280, compression test

Question
I am considering buying a Mercedes 280 SEL 3.5 with good service history and low kilometres for its age. 1971/150000ks
I have had the car checked by a mechanic and had a good report. However when I spoke to a club member about the compression [110 on all 8 cylinders] he said it should be 150 to 160. I have wrestled with the results of the test and wondered how much difference the reading if the engine was hot or cold. The car uses no oil , blows no smoke and drives with plenty of punch. The motor is a M116 high compression 9.5 :1 .Should I be wary .Thanks .Tony

Answer
First, although well meaing, 'club members' are not spec books. Get one and find out exactly what you specific engine should run.

Second, as a general rule, with all things being good, the overall compression number does not matter as long as all cylinders are within 10-15% of each other. Sounds like your are dead on.

It would not worry me.
