Motorcycle Repair: Non running 1986 V-Max, component test, jump starter

Question
Hey Chris,
I have recently acquired a 1986 V-max, very cheap, that has been sitting in a garage for 7 years. Obviously the bike is not running and I am in the process of seeing about getting it running for as little cost as possible. The previous owner said it ran before it went dormant. When the bike was put into hybernation gas was left in the tank. Can you help walk me through what I should do once I drain the tank and see if this bike will even turn over.  Also , do you know, if a portable jump starter will turn the bike over without a battery in place (i.e. hook the jump starter cables directly to the battery leads).  I don't want to waste money on a battery if this bike turns out to be too far gone.  Any info or advice would be great.

Thanks,
Mark

Answer
Hi Mark.

Since the bike was supposedly running when put in storage, then it should run again.

Start by doing a proper cleaning of the carbs. Replace the fuel lines.  Also pull the tank and reseal it.  Tank sealant can be found at any good bike shop.  Refill the tank with fresh fuel and prime the carbs.  Replace the plugs and all fluids in the bike

Check the ignition system from power to plugs.  Make sure that there are no shorts or bad components.  The repair manual will have component test specs.

I would not recommend using an automotive jumpstarter.  Hook the bike up to a regular car battery (with the engine turned OFF).  That will be more than enough to start the bike.

Replace the tires.  Whether you believe it or not, they are quite probably dry-rotted.  7 years of storage will do that.

Once the bike is running, then you can find out if there is deterioration in any other areas of the machine.

Let me know what you find.
Good luck and ride safe.
