Classic/Antique Car Repair: Son seeks education, antique car restoration, auto restorers

Question
My 18 year old son ...wants to attend a school that will teach him antique car restoration. He isn't interested in normal auto body that our local votec or junior college offers. This is way above my understanding .I was searching the internet and this web site came up .My 4th great grandmother's maiden name was Sears so the web site caught my eye.I thought what the heck..I will ask your advice. What schools would you recommend..preferably in the mid west as we are in Missouri.

Answer
I am glad that you wrote. The best antique auto restorers that I have ever known cam from the traditional auto repair industry. In order to properly restore or rebuild ya gotta have the basics, welding, painting, metal bumping, as well as removal and replacement procedures. The local auto schools is the place to start. Then there are the private schools like Nashville College Of Auto and Diesel, Wyoming Tech, UTI, and more. They can all be found on the web. But with 50 years in the business if I were hiring in a restoration shop I would be looking for a firm foundation in the basic skills. It is all too often that we see a youngster go to one of these specialized schools and come out being able to talk a good story but lack the basic hands on. Please send me a private message about the family name.
