Classic/Antique Car Repair: automatic trans switch, 1957 ford fairlane, park position

1957 ford fairlane,customline, two door hardtop. 292 V8 automatic trans. My car will start in neutral but when i put it in park I cant engage the starter. I see the switch but it doesnt look like it comes off easily. Help! thank you

Sorry, but you are going to have to pull the switch. Also, that may not be the worst of it. You may have a small metal piece broke off inside the trans.

BUT, before doing all that, try really jamming the shifter in the park position while holding the ignition on and see if it is just an adjustment problem.
