Classic/Antique Car Repair: Front Brake drums, cap cotter, wheel bearing

Question
I have a 1953 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup.  I am repairing the brakes.  I have completed the back brakes with no problems but when trying to remove the front drums but cannot get the drums off.  I have looked for new drums and they do not include the front hub to come off with the drum.  My question is are the front drums attached to the front hub?  If not how do I get the drums off?

Thanks

Bennie

Answer
The front brake drums are riveted to the front hubs. Well rivet may not be quite the correct word as the wheel lug studs are pressed into the hub and through the drum and then swagged over like a rivet. To get them off remove the small hub cap, cotter pin, and large nut that hold the wheel bearing in place. Then remove the hub and drum as a unit. The outer wheel bearing will fall out as you pull the drum so have a rag handy to catch the bearing so that it does not fall in the dirt and get grit in it. Good luck, Brad
