Classic/Antique Car Repair: Piston Rings, oversize pistons, ring groove

Question
Tazz,

I am rebuilding an engine and when I checked the end gap on the standard size rings I have the end gap was greater than the specs called for.  Is it possible to install oversize rings, say .01, on standard size pistons or is it necessary to do a rebore and install oversize pistons?

Thank You!

Jerry

Answer
I'm not saying you haven't, but usually the problem in this instance is that the ring groove in not completely clean to shiny metal and therefore the gap doesn't close properly.

I have known people to use oversized rings in 'worn' engines, but I do not know how long they lasted compared to a bore job.
