Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1978 lincoln mark v, lincoln mark, plug wires

Question
can you tell me if it's possible for the lifters to become loose over time? I'am experiencing a ticking
sound and my mechanic can't seem to pinpoint the problem.

Answer
Hi Keith:
A ticking sound from under the hood could be several things.

1. The lifters will tick if not enough oil has gotten to them. Doing a warm-up period you could hear ticking until the oil is good and warm and is lubricating them. Make sure you have the correct amount of clean oil and if the clicking doesn't go away after she warms up, it maybe something else.

2. Also, such a ticking sound could come from the spark plugs if their is arcing going on. Check to make sure no plug wires have popped off and that the wires are good and tight on the plugs. The best way to check for arcing is at night in the dark. With the engine running look for any signs of sparks around the plugs and wires. Also, if the plug wires are bad, you should see a white powdery residue on the wires.
