Classic/Antique Car Repair: 62 Bel Air, classic car owner, chevy dealer

Question
I just purchased a 62 Bel Air, I am no Mechanic and not really familiar withe the older Engines. I bought this car so me and my thirteen old son could have something to do together. As far as working on it goes. It has a sraight 6 in it but I dont believe it is the original motor. I know they made a 250,292,230 and I dont know which one it is. IS there a distinct way to tell. I checked the numbers on the motor but none matched at the auto parts store. I asked The guy I bought the car from said it was a 292 . But from my research I know they did not put that motor in the Bel airs. Also, the car came withou a carb, how easy is it to change from 1 barrel to two barrel for more power. and do you have change the linkage, and how difficult is that? Thanks in advance . Virgin classic car owner.

Answer
The numbers on the engine will tell you what it is, you got the wrong autoparts store.

Call your local Chevy dealer and asked the service manager. If he won't help you, send me the numbers.

To change from a one barrel to a two, you have to change the intake manifold or put on an adapter plate. Intakes on a 6 are as easy as they look. Adapter plate will not be as effective.

Linkage should be pretty close.
