Classic/Antique Car Repair: filling radiator, air pockets, expansion tank

Question
Could you briefly explain the correct procedure for filling a radiator with water/antifreeze on a car WITHOUT
an expansion tank? Is necessary to fill while running the engine? I appreciate your help.
Thanks

Answer
With the engine stone cold, it is ok to fill it without it running, but the possibility exist of having air pockets and the thermostat is not open causing serious incomplete filling. Some thermostats have a weep hole and can be filled cold.

The best way is to have the engine up to temp and running and then fill o top of radiator neck adn replace cap.
