Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1979 lincoln mrk v, gearshift lever, backup lights

Question
when put in reverse, the back up lights don't come on unless you move the gearshift lever and hold it down. the pointer is slightly off. has a c6 trans.  looks like down by the trans. underneath car, there is a adjustment, that would move the pointer to  R    is that where you adjust  it to make the backup lights come on.

Answer
Ron the adjustment on the transmission is for the combination neutral start/back up light switch. Adjusting that should get the back up lights working when the shifter is locked in the R detent. The pointer is adjusted on the steering column right below the pointer. You may have to remove a cover off the bottom of the dash to see the cable that operated the pointer. Good Luck.
