Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1966 mustang 3 speed transmission, shift levers, shift forks

Question
my 1966 mustang is stuck in second gear and I can't get it out, can you help me. I took it out for a ride and when I tried to go from second to third it will not shift.

Answer
The shift forks are out of alignment. Jack the car up from the drivers side and make sure that it is on safety stands. There are two shift levers on the side of the transmission. With the car up in the air one rear wheel should be off the ground. The front lever is the 2nd, 3rd gear lever. Move it towards the rear of the car and the unit should then be in neutral. Once in neutral see if the shifter inside the car will shift properly. If not there may be wear in the shifter or there could be a problem in the transmission. Good Luck. Brad
