Classic/Antique Car Repair: 1948 caddy water pump, brass bushings, santa fe springs

Question
How do I fix a leaking water pump? I just rebuilt the pump with a rebuild kit, the pump it's self really has no seal per say. There is a set of brass bushings and some composite washers, called seals, but it seems the grease is what really seals the pump. I first used regular grease but then found out you use waterpump grease, boat axel bearing grease. I pumped the grease fitting until the new water pump grease came out. The pump still leaks out the shaft. The housing is not cracked and there is no play in the bushings. I just can't seem to get the pump to seal. ohh yeah the engine is a 347ci flathead v8. Please help me with your infinite wisdom!!?

Answer
I suspect one of the brass bushings was damaged when re-assembling the pump.  My advice is to take it off and send it to a machine shop equiped rebuilder, like Egge Machine company in Santa Fe Springs, CA for a professional rebuild. They make a business out of rebuilding pumps, amongst other thing.  If there is a scratch on the shaft in the wrong place, or a stress mark etc, they will have the equipment to take care of it.

I have had the same experience as you with one of the pumps I rebuilt (for a Packard, but that doesn't matter), once you get into that situation, you are not going to be able to fix it yourself, in my opinion.

Sorry I can't be more help.
