Classic/Antique Car Repair: 70 Camaro headlight problem, 70 camaro, radiator support

Question
Hi Brad, When I bought the Camaro, the headlights seamed to work ok. As time went on I found that when the car was warmed up they would go out. I replaced the switch, cleaned up the grounds on the radiator support, they came on, only till I drove the car again. I also changed out the high-low switch on the floor they came on, until I drove the car again. All the side lights, marker lights and brake lights work with out a hitch. Can you help with this question. Thanks Ron

Answer
Ron, I would suggest that you check the amperage draw of the headlights. Some of the newer high powered bulbs can draw more than the circuit breaker in the headlight switch will carry without opening up of tripping when warmed up. I had this same problem with a 1971 Plymouth that I once had and had replaced the standard headlights with high powered halogen. Also if the car is equipped with driving lights that are on when the headlights are on they will cause the tripping also. I found the cure was to wire a relay between the switch and the headlights.
